The Ten Best and Worst Interview Questions
I am writing an article on the ten best and worst interview questions (or the best or worst answers) for 2007 and would love your contributions. I can cite you in the article if you want the publicity or not if you want to stay anonymous. Either way, I would love to hear the questions that you have asked (or been asked) that worked well or caused the wheels to come off the interview.
So far, the best that I have was contributed by Kristen Fife, a recruiter at BSQUARE in Seattle:
"how do you define a smart person"? It's less about what they say than how they view people and can indicate their broad or narrow understanding. "
I love the simplicity of the question and the insight into the candidates perspective on the world.
The worst so far?
Contributed by Rodney Smozyck, Recruiting Manager at TEAM Industrial Services in Houston:
"So the last person in this job was very bad at it. Will you be less as bad or more as bad?"
So, what questions can you contribute?

Since we are talking about good and bad interview questions, here is a link to an article on MSN/CareerBuilder in which I was quoted dealing with the use of brainteaser or logic questions in an interview. My blog (http://gregmoran.wordpress.com/) has a link to all of my interview notes and a pretty detailed discussion of the how and why behind brainteaser interviews.

Thanks for your contributions so far. Here are a couple new ones in the "worst" category and keep the interview questions coming!
-"What type of vehicle do you drive?" - From a manager who believes he can ascertain meaningful personality traits from the type of car you cart around in. - "Can I see your hands?' - from a business owner and part-time palmist who thought he could determine my fit in his company by the landscape of my palms. - "I once asked a candidate why they were relocating to the Jacksonville area the answer was 'I have some trouble i got into in Tampa. I am trying to get away from it. Will this be a problem in the hiring process" - "Being that we are prone to Hurricanes on the Florida coast I also had a candidate from Michigan ask me if there were 'round shaped houses available in the area should he relocate.' He then proceeded to explain wind drag and the differences between a round home and a traditional home. - "I also had a candidate ask me if anybody else was interviewing for a position in accounting. She claimed that she was not competitive and would not be interested if she wasn't the only one interviewing." |
